Corset Sizing

Corset sizing is a lot different than that of other garment types since a corset’s measurement is taken when it is fully lace-closed. Ordering a corset in a size too big is a common mistake, which could easily be avoided if you knew about corset sizing. In ordering a corset therefore, you should not use your normal dress or undergarment size as basis. Rather, refer to your waist measurement and how much you want to reduce from it. From there, order a corset with a size that is smaller than your actual waistline. Below are basic steps on how to measure for a corset.

How to Measure for a Corset

Measure Your Natural Waist

1. To determine your natural waist, stand straight then bend to one side. Your natural waist is where the bend appears.

2. Go back to your upright position and keep your heels together.

3. Place the measuring tape around your natural waist.

4. Place your thumb behind the tape. Do not pull it tight.

5. The number that the edge of the measuring tape meets is your natural waist’s measurement.

Measure Your Bust

1. Stand straight with your hands dangling freely at the sides. Keep your heels together.

2. Place the measuring tape around the widest part of your back and the fullest part of your bust. See to it that you don’t place the tape under your bust.

3. Place your thumb behind the tape. Do not pull it tight.

4. The number that the edge of the measuring tape meets is your bust’s measurement.

Measure Your Hip

1. Stand straight with your hands dangling freely at the sides. Keep your heels together.

2. Place the measuring tape around the widest part of your hips.

3. Place your thumb behind the tape. Do not pull it tight.

4. The number that the edge of the measuring tape meets is your hip’s measurement.

Important Tips

1. Strictly follow the instructions above so you can accurately take your measurements.

2. Keep in mind that your natural waist is not the portion where you usually button your pants; hence, your waist measurement is not the same as your jeans’ size.

How to Choose the Right Size

Order a corset that measures four to six inches smaller than your natural waistline for it to fit and function properly.

1. Those new to corsets who want it to fit comfortably should initially order a size with only a two-inch reduction.

2. Most people deduct four inches as this is the standard corset size.

3. If you are experienced however and in the process of waist training, you may deduct a maximum of six inches to get your desired result.

Important Tips

1. Bear in mind that corset laces don’t always have to be tightened all the way, especially if you choose one with a modesty panel since it could be laced more loosely without showing a gap. Having a bit of allowance in the size is therefore advisable.

2. Reduce less inches if you are opting for a solid frame rather than a soft one since the former isn’t as flexible as the latter. Reducing six inches is hence not recommendable for solid ones as this will result to large lacing gaps.

3. Ordering a corset size with a two-inch reduction is not advisable unless one is in the preliminary stage of waist training and needs to begin with the most loose size.

4. Those with a natural waistline bigger than 36 inches, whose waists are supple enough to be sucked in, are recommended to buy a corset that is six inches smaller than their natural waist.

Take caution that corset sizing may still vary depending on the style and designer. It is not safe to conclude that your reduced waist size in a given style of corset stays the same for all corsets of the same kind.
